Leah Remini is not holding anything back. The former King of Queens star revealed that she was asked to recruit Kevin James, her co-star on the hit sitcom, into the church of Scientology.
Remini’s was asked while she was still a member of the church but she did not want to involve James.
“They always tried to get me to, [asking] ‘Why is he not in? Why have you not promoted it to him?’ I was like, ‘Because he’s Catholic. He doesn’t want anything to do with it,'” the actress said. “They let it go after a while, but usually you’d be expected to recruit, especially with somebody you work with for nine years.”
A Scientology spokesman denied that Remini had been urged to recruit James, and said in a statement, “We have nothing to do with Kevin James and never attempted to ‘recruit’ him to the Church. How does Leah Remini bring this up now after she wrote an entire book and didn’t mention it? Remini does it to get attention.” The statement also reads, “the only thing we know about Kevin James is that Remini would repeatedly tell the Church that he was a bully and we tried to counsel her to be more open and communicate so they could get along better.”
The actress has been working in her A&E documentary series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” that traces her departure from the church and her efforts to help former members.
The series came after her memoir, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. The documentary series was nominated for tow Emmy, including Outstanding Informational Series or Special. Remini is working in a second season.
Meanwhile, Kevin James and Remini will be reunited next fall, when the new season of James’s show Kevin Can Wait debuts in September, now with Remini in a regular role.
