There’s a new celeb that wants to run for office. Caitlyn Jenner, the Olympic athlete, reality TV star and transgender activist, suggested she could run for office in order to change the face of the Republican Party.
Jenner said that she’s currently looking into where she can do a “better job”of promoting LGBT rights inside Washington, DC. When asked if she would run for the Senate, she told John Catsimatidis on the Cats Roundtable radio show: ‘I’ve considered it. I like the political side of it.’
“I gotta find out where I can do a better job,” she said. “Can I do a better job from the outside, kind of working the perimeter of the political scene, being open to talk to anybody? Or are you better off from the inside, and we are in the process of determining that.”
The Olympic gold-medal winning decathlete also said that she hopes to change the public’s perception of the GOP.
“The perception of the Republican Party is that they are all about rich white guys trying to make money. I would hope in the next generation … that we can change the perception of the Republican Party and make it the party of equality,” she said.
Jenner, who came out as transgender in 2015, supported Trump during the last election, but called his rollback of protections for transgender students a “disaster.”
The next opportunity to run may be in 2018, but Dianne Feinstein (left), 84, the incumbent Democratic senator from California, has not said whether she plans to retire. Kamala Harris, California’s other senator, was just elected, and her seat does not expire until 2023
Celebs are no stranger to the California Republican Party, since they’ve elected plenty of them over the years, including former president Ronald Reagan, former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and former congressman Sonny Bono.
Also, Jenner may not be the only one with political aspirations, since musician Kid Rock announced that he was considering a run for political office. Even inside her own family she wouldn’t be alone, given that Kanye West announced last fall that he’s running for president in 2020.
